For those in a hurry…
You can help us to continue to provide a free 24 hour emergency service in several ways but the easiest is probably by making a donation. They will process a credit/debit card donation (but note that the credit card charge is much greater). Where applicable we will recover the Gift Aid.
There are many other ways to support us, which may suit you better, and these are covered below.
Other Ways to Support Us…
Make an online donation via our donate page (or link in paragraph above). You can elect not to receive any marketing material but we will normally send you our annual newsletter for a couple of years following a donation, unless you tell us otherwise.
Make an online donation via our Facebook page. Occasional posts will include a donate button. Gift Aid details will be taken, if applicable, but they will be passed to us and we will process the claim. Based on the Gift Aid information we may send you a newsletter but with no marketing material.
Send a Donation by cheque (payable to DFMRT) using the Donation Form linked at the bottom of this page.
Set up a Standing Order:
· Using the Donation Form at the bottom of the page.
· Direct with your bank with payments to Sort Code: 20 04 68, Account No: 93133834, (for Barclays account: The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team CIO) with your name as the reference. If you can allow us to claim the Gift Aid then we will need the Gift Aid mandate which is a part of the Donation Form below.
Make a Donation by BACS using the bank account details in the paragraph above, with your name as the reference. Ideally also send the Donation Form/Gift Aid Mandate so we know who you are and so we can claim the Gift Aid, if appropriate.
Other Platforms. Some people donate via CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) either by way of their cheques, online through their website or through their ‘Give as You Earn’ scheme. Neither of these is gift-aidable so with a potential loss in income.
Sponsorship. If you wish to be sponsored for a particular event, such as a rider on the Fred Whitton Cycle Challenge, this can also be set up via our 'Give as you Live' link (donations) or on Facebook, as above.
Raise money through online shopping. For a wide range of online sellers you could give us a small percentage of your online shopping at no cost to yourself through ‘Give as You Live' (GAYL) managed by 'Everyclick’ of The Charities Trust. Our first shopper raised £225 in 18 months. 4000 retailers participate in the scheme including Amazon, B&Q, John Lewis and M&S. You must first register as a supporter of DFMRT by logging onto the GAYL website. Just your e-mail address and a password are required. When you wish to shop online return to the GAYL website, which will remember you, and click on the store you wish to shop at. You will then flick straight to the store website and shop as usual. A percentage of your bill will be donated to DFMRT.
Leaving a Legacy. If you are in a position to remember The Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team in your Will the link on the paragraph title describes the various ways of doing this. Such a gift will be exempt of inheritance tax but it may be worth considering that if you pay income or capital gains tax a donation during your life could attract a further 25% Gift Aid.

While we consider anyone who contributes to our cause, either financially or in an active way, as a supporter we have a strong band of regular supporters who over years have established a more personal link to the team. We also have a ‘Life Supporter’ category established with a £300 donation. All supporters receive our annual newsletter. If you wish to be more active you could either help out on occasional fundraising activities, for perhaps a few hours once a year, or take one of our attractive ‘Every Penny Counts’ collecting boxes (pictured below). Initial contact could be made via the Donation Form at the bottom of the page or by contacting the Fundraising Officer by e-mail (see ‘Contacts’ tab).
Our Data Protection procedures are described in the Donation Form linked below. In simple terms we can assure you that any future contact will always be carefully considered. While we may send occasional information, usually in the form of our annual newsletter, we will not send marketing material without your consent. This has been assumed where there was been an on-going dialogue over some years. If anything is not to your liking please let us know.
For those wishing for further details…
The services of a mountain rescue team in the UK are free to the recipient. However it costs about £50,000 a year to run our team, including funding put aside for large capital expenditure such as a new vehicle. Unlike most other emergency services, mountain rescue is a completely voluntary service with each team being a separate charity responsible for its own funding.
Our relationship with the local community and those potentially needing our support, which can be anywhere out of reach to the normal ambulance service, is excellent. We take pride in the service we provide - and it has to be said some enjoyment from the hill-going ventures - as well as an appreciation of a strong bond of teamwork and camaraderie. In return we receive support from many individuals and organisations. However there is little room for complacency and fundraising remains an on-going task.
Our members are all volunteers. They are provided with some items of all-weather clothing and personal protection equipment but receive no expenses for any activity within our large area. The commitment of all members is extensive with a full team training programme, individual courses, fundraising and administrative needs. So the assistance given by supporters on fundraising is a real bonus.
The designation of Supporter was launched in 2007 for individuals, families and organisations with an interest in the mountains and our part in the provision of free emergency cover. Their number has steadily increased and they now provide a significant part of our funding needs. We rely on a great many small donations for our normal running costs with the occasional legacy or grant from our parent organisation towards the larger capital projects.
Other fundraising initiatives include:
· Marshalling adventure-type events – such as the Keswick to Barrow Walk, the Fred Whitton Cycle Challenge and occasional national orienteering championships.
· Car park management for local car rallies.
· Supermarket collections.
· Attendance at local shows, schools; visits to our base and talks to local organisations.
· Collecting boxes in shops, garages and pubs throughout our area.
· 'Every Penny Counts' collecting boxes held by supporters (illustrated).
The above not only help with fundraising but heighten public awareness of our role and the measures that people should take to ensure their personal safety on the fells.
Any support you can give us is much appreciated and will allow us to continue to provide the professional service which we believe our reputation confirms.
